DEGREE LEVEL BIOLOGY – HNC’S BIOLOGISTS EXPLORE THE BIOLOGICAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND LEGAL IMPLICATIONS OF THE VAPE INDUSTRY

HNC’s Year 12 A Level Biology students have recently spent the day at the University of Huddersfield taking part in a number of degree level workshops exploring the environmental, health and legal impacts of the vaping industry.

Students at HNC experience exceptional opportunities both inside and outside the classroom, from hearing from local employers to undertaking work experience to taking part in degree level workshops. All opportunities at HNC are designed to support students to progress with confidence and consider careers and pathways that are right for their unique ambitions.

Year 12 A Level Biology students were recently invited to spend the day at the University of Huddersfield, taking part in a special degree level taster day that explored the impact of the vape industry from a biological, environmental and legal perspective, directly linking to topics studied here at HNC. On the day, the group explored the environmental impact that vape products have on the pH and metal levels in soil, the chemical classification of vapes and the effects that those chemicals have on the respiratory system, and the legal framework that regulates vape products. The day ended with a research workshop, where the group explored research parameters and analysed laboratory test data. The group also enjoyed a campus tour and had the opportunity to speak with professors and current students about the range of options available at the university.

The topics explored on the day linked heavily with the A Level Biology curriculum. Lucinda Pang, Teacher of A Level Biology shares more. “In A Level Biology we look at a wide range of topics from a number of different perspectives, including exploring areas such as gas exchange, lung structure and cell biology. In this enlightening taster day at the University, our students were challenged to put this knowledge to the test in a number of degree level workshops that not only looked at the biological impact that vaping has on the human body, but the wider implications, from the environmental impact to disposing vape products to how research can influence the laws and regulations around controlled substances. Thank you to the University for such a brilliant day”.
