EXPLORING NEXT STEPS: HNC STUDENTS DISCOVER MORE ABOUT CAMP AMERICA

HNC recently welcomed guest speaker Dave King from CCUSA, a leading cultural exchange programme that provides young people with opportunities to work, volunteer or intern abroad, to share more about the benefits of undertaking a life-changing gap year experience.

Students at HNC are encouraged to explore a wide range of progression options, whether that’s university, an apprenticeship, the world of work – or even a gap year! We recently welcomed Dave King from CCUSA, who delivered a guest talk on the opportunities available to HNC students once they have completed their Level 3 studies, and how by volunteering or working abroad, they can develop life skills that will support their long-term career progression. CCUSA, which is known for securing placements at American summer camps (Camp America), also places students in areas such as travel and seasonal roles or helps applicants to secure professional internships in areas such as Business, Finance and Engineering in countries across the globe, including Canada and Australia.

During the session, students taking part heard more about the different programmes and initiatives CCUSA offer, including more about the skills and confidence a gap year experience can develop. The group were invited to take part in a Q&A session, which included useful information about the application process and which programmes would best suit their long-term ambitions.

Jamie Marsden, Head of Faculty Enlighten, comments “Students at HNC are given opportunity to explore all of their options post HNC, whether this is university, an apprenticeship, the world of work or developing themselves through an overseas experience. Taking a gap year and volunteering or working abroad develops a skillset that supports students to progress to their long-term ambitions with confidence, as well as offering a unique life experience. Taking part in an experience such as Camp America is one way our students can develop after College, and is just one of the options available to our young people today. It is clear from the questions they asked that many of our students are keen to learn about how taking a gap year can add value to their skillset and build their cultural capital. We would like to thank Dave for such an enlightening talk.”
