Sunday 8 March was International Women’s Day, a day that is celebrated globally to fight against gender inequality and celebrate the social, political and economic achievements of women. HNC’s Feminist Society hosted a special celebration in College to share more about the day, raise awareness for women’s rights and discuss with our community how by working together, we can shape a better future for all.
The Colleges Feminist Society, who meets weekly to raise awareness of continuing gender equality, hosts our annual International Women’s Day celebrations, bringing our College community together to share stories about the women who inspire them. From sportswomen Lucy Bronze and Simone Biles to actress and activist Emma Watson, we heard from you about hundreds of women who have inspired our community. Students and staff also made pledges to make a difference, and shared more about how they will personally forge equality for women .
The Feminist Society also worked on a variety of resources to showcase the different barriers women within their subject areas face – from the challenges women face in achieving a diagnosis for health conditions such as endometriosis, to misogyny within the media. The group also explored this year’s theme, Give to Gain, showcasing how when organisations and communities give generously, opportunities for women increase, and when opportunities for women increase, we all benefit.
Alexandra Mountford-Jones – who leads the Feminist Society- comments further “Our Feminist Society is open to all students at HNC who want to shape a better future for all by raising awareness of how gender inequality impacts us all. Our International Women’s Day celebration is just one was in which we celebrate our diverse College community, and it was wonderful to see so many of our staff and students join our celebrations and share more about the inspirational women in their lives. Thank you to our Feminist Society who have made such a positive impact and put together a genuinely wonderful celebration”.
