HNC BUSINESS STUDENTS GRADUATE ASDA YOUNG LEADERS PROGRAMME
07.07.2026HNC’s A Level and Applied Business students have completed the ASDA Young Leaders Programme, bringing together the work they have completed over the past academic year with a final presentation pitch to ASDA executives.
The ASDA’s Young Leader’s Programme is a nationwide initiative that supports young people who are considering progressing to a career in retail. Year 12 students from across the country take part in the initiative, and with the retail sector employing approximately 3 million people – making up around 10% of the UK’s workforce – taking part is a key stepping stone for those hoping to secure a role within the sector. ASDA itself employs over 150,000 people across functions as diverse as in-store retail, distribution, fashion, technology, and pharmaceuticals, and offers a range of early careers opportunities, including apprenticeships, across the business.
On the final day of the programme, the teams participated in an ice-breaker session to complete an activity that saw them put into practise their negotiation and communication skills. Once completed, the groups then spent some time with their mentors to finalise their presentations and pitches. The day ended with each team presenting their final ideas to the ASDA executives and the team from Inspiro Learning, who administrate ASDA’s apprenticeship schemes, as well as the 50 other young people taking part in the Young Leaders Programme. HNC’s team delivered a smooth and well thought out presentation, and when faced with some robust questions, worked together as a team to impress the panel with their answers.
James Tindall, teacher of Business, shares more “Our Business students have been working incredibly hard over the past academic year, taking part in number of events and workshops as part of the ASDA Young Leaders Programme. During the course of the programme, they have been working on a projects related to retail sustainability, working with senior ASDA executives to develop their business work-based skills. Over the course of the year, I have watched the groups develop their organisation, communication and teamwork (OPTICS) skills while developing a deeper understanding of how global businesses operate and the challenges they must overcome to be successful. Our teams’ final presentations were fantastic and the way they worked together to deliver such a polished performance truly embodied the College’s values of collaboration, commitment and resilience”.
