HNC “MAKES IT BEAUTIFUL” WITH SHOWSTOPPING PERFORMANCE OF HEATHERS, THE MUSICAL

HNC’s Year 13 Musical Theatre students have recently wowed audiences with their end of year performance of Heathers, The Musical, bringing to life the critically acclaimed Broadway dark teen drama in the College’s Boilerhouse Theatre.

Students studying Musical Theatre at HNC develop their academic knowledge in the classroom and performance technique on the stage, developing a wide variety of key skills that supports progression. Those studying for a Performing Arts qualification at HNC have the benefit of working with subject experts in state-of-the-art performance spaces, including the College’s Boilerhouse Theatre, and perform to live audiences throughout their time at the College. This year, our end of year musical was Heathers, The Musical, written by Laurence O’Keefe and Kevin Murphy. The musical follows a group of students as they navigate the dark side of high school, with challenging themes including toxic popularity, bullying, assault, and the search for identity in an oppressive high school hierarchy.

Supported by an ensemble cast, our final year Musical Theatre students have recently wowed audiences with their recent run of Heathers, The Musical, with performances taking place across an entire weekend, starting with a Friday afternoon matinee performance attended by Salendine Nook High School, and ending with a sold-out Saturday night finale. Songs performed included Beautiful, Candy Store, Dead Girl Walking and Meant to be Yours – with some incredibly emotive performances from our cast.

Rehearsals for the show have been taking place all year, with the cast and crew working incredibly hard to bring the characters and stage to life; the ‘Heathers’ (McNamara, Duke and Chandler) were portrayed by Scarlett R, Tahlia D, Amelie M, Isabella B, Meadow L and Lexi K. Veronica was played by Ruby I and Katie H and Guidance Counsellor Ms Fleming was portrayed by Imogen W. Athletes Kurt Kelly and Ram Sweeney were played by Hayden B and Vikram A respectively, with Martha Dunnstock played by Becca P and Jason ‘JD’ Dean played by Kayla F.

The Creative Team supporting behind the scenes included Director, Mark Johnson, Choreographer, Cat John and Technician, David Cross, with Reece Garea-Jennings, Sue Bennett, Toby Kershaw and Grace Bennett providing additional support with vocals and sound. Cat John, Choreographer and Teacher of Musical Theatre shares more “Wow – our final year Musical Theatre students really did “make it beautiful”! I am incredibly proud of the hard work, talent and dedication that it took to bring our end of year musical, Heathers, to life. From building and designing the set, to pulling together the programme, our students have gone above and beyond to deliver a run of genuinely fantastic shows. I am so proud of everyone who took part and I know that my final year performers will go on to incredible achievements both on and off the stage”.
