HNC SHOWS RACISM THE RED CARD

On Friday 16 October, HNC turned the College into a sea of red for Wear it Red Day in support of the charity, Show Racism the Red Card.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Show Racism the Red Card, a charity movement inspired by footballer Shaka Hislop. After being racially abused at a petrol station in Newcastle, his abusers recognised that he was a famous footballer and asked for his autograph. Realising that he could use the power of football as a tool for anti-racism education, Show Racism the Red Card was born, with an extensive educational programme that has now reached millions of young people in schools across the UK. Since 2014, a national Wear it Red Day has taken place – and this year our College community came out in force to demonstrate our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, and to show racism the red card!

Wear it Red Day forms part of the College’s wider Black History Month celebrations. Throughout October, students across the curriculum have been exploring the achievements and contributions of influential Black figures, from A Level Computer Scientists learning more about the work of Dr Joy Buolamwini, whose work helped to fight bias in AI technology, to students in A Level 3D Design researching the influential designer, Charles Harrison, and how he fought systemic racism to build a successful career that changed the face of furniture design in the USA. A Level History students, alongside students on the XL and History Club programmes, attended a lecture series on the role of music to the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Power Movement, and how these movements shaped opportunities for future generations.

Emily Briggs, Faculty Lead Enlighten (Social Sciences) shares more “This year sees the Show Racism the Red Card movement’s 30th anniversary – and we are proud to have played our part in supporting the movement by turning HNC red! HNC is a diverse and inclusive community, and seeing our staff and students show their support by wearing something red to College was incredibly powerful. FREDIE (Fairness, Respect, Equality, Inclusion & Engagement) values are embedded within our approach to learning here at HNC, forming a key strand to our HNC Experience Blueprint. This Black History Month, as well as joining us in supporting Show Racism the Red Card, students across the curriculum have been exploring Black voices, stories and achievements, helping us to continue to foster and celebrate our community and further develop our understanding of racial justice and equality for all”.
