HNC recently welcomed a number of local employers and apprenticeship providers to HNC as part of the College’s wider Vision Week activities for a special event aimed at students pursuing STEM based careers post-HNC.
Students at HNC are naturally supported to plan for their future careers throughout their time studying at the College, and during Vision Week, students at HNC spent dedicated time discovering more about the opportunities available to them after College. In this special event, students from across Years 12 and 13 who had indicated that they were planning to progress to a STEM related career after completing their studies, were invited to a take part in a STEM ‘breakfast’ event, an informal session which aimed to match local employers to potential applicants. In preparation, invited students also took part in a number of workshops which focused on creating CVs and cover letters, as well as developing skills such as public speaking and networking.
On the day, we were joined by Syngenta, Cummins, Camira Fabrics, Nufarm, Kirklees College, Appris Training, BASF, Hill Rise Architecture, the University of Huddersfield’s National Health Innovation Centre and Paxman Coolers, who provided a wide-range of opportunities – such as advertising for current vacancies – for the group to explore. As well as approaching the organisations regarding recruitment, the group were also able to ask any questions they may have about different roles and industries, and discover more about securing their dream careers.
Feedback from students has been positive, with one student commenting “This was a really helpful event. I was able to speak to local employers who gave me advice on the skills I needed to build which would help any future applications. I was also able to network with a local company who are now considering my application for work experience”
Joe Norton, Director of Independent Learning, comments “Students at HNC are supported to progress confidently, whether they are hoping to move on to university, an apprenticeship or the world of work when they have completed their Level 3 studies. In this special event, those students who had indicated an interest in progressing to a STEM based apprenticeship or role straight after College had the opportunity to brush up on their work-based skills and discover more about the local opportunities available to them. We are incredibly lucky here in Kirklees to have a wide range of STEM industries who actively recruit to a variety of roles, and this was the perfect opportunity for the group to network with industry leaders to discover how they can secure their dream career. Thank you to our guests who provided a genuinely beneficial session to our students, who now have a clearer idea of where their next steps can take them”.
