HNC STUDENTS TO EXPLORE HOW USING THEIR VOICE SHAPES A BETTER FUTURE DURING UK PARLIAMENT WEEK

HNC has revealed that students will be taking part in a range of special activities during UK Parliament Week. Although all students are given regular opportunities to understand how they can be an active citizen in a democratic Britain, UK Parliament Week presents an ideal opportunity to shine a spotlight on how actively using our voice shapes a better future.

During the week which runs 18 – 22 November, institutions across the country will be exploring and debating why politics matter, and developing an understanding of how by voting and learning more about how democracy works, we can proactively influence the society we live in today.

During UK Parliament Week our students will be:

  • Exploring the link between politics and their subjects, including how government decisions have influenced the sectors they will work in both now and in the future
  • Enjoying a democratic experience and voting for the College’s new Charity of the Year from a shortlist that has been put together in consultation with the Student Council
  • Sharing their views and experiences on key issues including violence against women, how we can rehabilitate offenders, and the links between drugs, gangs and knife crime through a series of workshops with Leaders Unlocked, who share feedback with policy makers. These also present students with the opportunity to develop their knowledge on these important issues. The workshops will take place at HNC on 19 – 20 November and a link to book will be issued via Teams
  • Encouraged to join Mayor’s Question Time with Tracy Brabin on 28 November (7.30pm – 9pm, University of Huddersfield). This is an externally organised opportunity, but will allow guests to question the Mayor about her progress towards her pledges, as well hearing from the Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime about regional and national issues. Students can register here: https://www.yourvoice.westyorks-ca.gov.uk/wymqt

Catherine Cushnie, Assistant Principal comments: “This year’s General Election turn out was 59.7% – a drop from the 2019 election. Our students are the next generation of voters and throughout their journey we work to ensure that they understand why their voice has influence in a democratic Britain and how they must use their voice to help create the change they want to see. Students regularly experience democracy in action at HNC – whether this is through choosing the College’s Charity of the Year, voting in a mock General Election so that they can see how by using their vote they will be choosing the party that decides on how the country is run, or being equipped with the knowledge and experiences they will need to join the debate on the important issues that affect us all. UK Parliament Week is a chance for us all to discuss why politics matter, and explore on a more detailed level how active participation presents us with the opportunity to create the future we want to see. We’re looking forward to a busy UK Parliament Week!”
