HNC’s Performing Arts students have recently hosted their annual Winter Showcase, with students from across A Level Dance and Applied Musical Theatre performing a variety of pieces in the College’s specialist performance space, the Boilerhouse Theatre, to a sell-out audience.
The annual Winter Showcase forms a key part of the College’s Applied Musical Theatre students’ assessment, with the group fully responsible for every aspect of the show, from designing the choreography to undertaking the promotion and marketing for the event. The show, which also included performances from the College’s A Level Dance students, opened with a brilliant flash mob style performance which brought every member of the group together in a dazzling and high energy performance, and concluded with a finale choreographed by Dance Captain, Lexi K.
The sold-out showcase – hosted by MCs Ruby I and Katie H – included a wide range of musical numbers, comedy sketches, dances and solo and group singing performances – including a much enjoyed sketch based on the Friends classic ‘we were on a break’, and solo performances from Scarlett R singing ‘On My Own’ (Les Misérables) and Vikram B singing ‘Tomorrow’ (Bugsy Malone). Dance students also performed a number of solo and group dances, including a powerful piece inspired by the Suffragette movement.
Though the event was student led, staff from across the College’s Creative and Digital Faculty supported the group, with Mark Johnson (Director), Cat John (Choreography), David Cross (Technician), Reece Carea-Jennings (Assistant Director) and Sue Bennit (Vocal Coach and MD) overseeing the show. Cat John, Teacher of A Level Dance and Applied Musical Theatre shares more “What a beautiful evening – I am incredibly proud of my Year 13 Applied Musical Theatre students for putting together such a wonderful winter showcase. Experiencing running an event of this scale is a key way in which we prepare our students for progressing to a competitive industry, and their hard work, dedication, motivation and commitment ensured that our winter showcase was a huge success. I have no doubt that the group will continue to shine on the stage and behind it for many years to come”.
