As students new and returning settle into – or back into – life at HNC, we are sharing our top tips for making the most out of your first term in College, and how by accessing the services available to you at HNC can prepare you for your future studies and help you to become your best self in the long term. This week, we’re looking at the College’s wellbeing support services, and how you can access a range of resources and support to help you build resilience and confidence that will benefit you far beyond your time at HNC.
The College’s wellbeing service, which is open to all students, is based in the wellbeing corridor in the Elder building. Here, students can access a range of services, from one-to-one appointments to collecting free sanitary products. Run by two experienced members of HNC, Rebecca and Tracy are on hand to provide an open-minded support service. The support via the wellbeing team is geared towards helping you to develop strategies and resilience to help you to help yourself. Here are our top five reasons for accessing our wellbeing services, and how you can make the most of them during your time at HNC!
A problem shared is a problem less complicated: talk through your feelings in a safe, confidential* and supportive space
Available as either a bookable 30-minute appointment (see the wellbeing channel on Teams to book), or via drop-in chats (when available), our experienced team are on hand to listen to your concerns in a safe, confidential* and open-minded space. No issue is too big or small to deal with, and the team are happy to chat through any topic that may be on your mind.
Build your emotional skillset: support with practical tips to combat stress and build resilience to support you throughout your college journey and beyond
From practising mindfulness techniques to learning how to develop practical tips to combat stress and anxiety, our wellbeing team can help you to explore techniques and strategies that work for you. This tailored approach to building skills in resilience is a key way in which we help prepare you for life’s challenges so you’re ready for whatever the future may hold.
Free period products for all: access a range of free products to keep costs down
Did you know that a young person can spend up to £250 a year on period products? There are a range of disposable products available to collect throughout the College day on the wellbeing corridor. You can also place orders for re-usable and eco-friendly products such as period pants and moon cups via the wellbeing Teams channel. Do make use of this service – it is entirely free and could save you (or your family) a significant amount!
Putting yourself first: seek advice on staying physically well
Healthy students are happy students! Making sure that you have access to support that can help you to lead happy, healthy lives is a key way in which you can become your best self. Our team can share healthy living tips with you, or sign post you to external services which can help you to improve your physical health, from nutrition to sexual health services.
Celebrate who you are: join an enrichment or support group to find your tribe
HNC is a diverse and inclusive community – and our wellbeing team celebrates your unique identity. As well as offering support to students from a range of backgrounds, there is also bespoke support in place for students, such as those who identify as LGBTQ+ – keep an eye out on Teams as we will be sharing more about our new LGBTQ+ group in the coming weeks!
Rebecca Charlton, Student Wellbeing Manager, shares more “The wellbeing services at HNC are designed to support you to build the emotional skills and resilience you will need to face life’s challenges, big or small, head on. We all could benefit from a listening and supportive ear from time to time, and our comprehensive wellbeing service is there for all our students to access. You may only need to see us once for a quick chat, or you may wish to access our services more regularly throughout your time at College to develop strategies that will help you to become your best self. No problem is too big or small to be shared. Please do reach out to us via our booking system on Teams, or speak to your Progress Tutor for further information about our services”.
