TURNING HNC YELLOW FOR WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY

Friday 9 October was World Mental Health Day, a day that is observed across the globe to raise awareness for, and reduce the stigma of, mental illness. As a College community, HNC turned yellow to show support for anyone living with mental illness, and to share more about the support that we offer our young people here in College.

HNC is a College that knows that happy students are successful students, and we support our students through a comprehensive package of support that is in place from the very start of Year 12. From a dedicated Progress Teacher who supports each student’s academic and pastoral journey, to the Student Wellbeing team who are on hand to discuss life’s ups and downs, young people at HNC always have someone to turn to and someone championing them. As a College, our students are supported more widely through a calendar of events that acknowledges and celebrates our diverse community of students and staff, ensuring that everyone feels welcome, heard and seen, and preparing all students to be the change in the world they wish to see.

On World Mental Health Day, staff and students joined us in turning HNC yellow. A Gallery of images form the day can be seen below. As well as showing our support with yellow, staff and students were invited to join a special event in the Junction, hosted by the College’s Enlighten team, to hear more about this year’s theme, ‘Lived Experiences, Real Voices’. On the day, students were asked to swap messages of kindness and heard more about how social media can impact mental health – both positively and negatively – and what we can do as a community to use social media responsibly.

Will Bacon, Enlighten Lead for Sport and Health shares more: “World Mental Health Day is a key event on the HNC calendar because good mental health is imperative to our students’ happiness and their success. Seeing staff and students wear yellow across the campus to show their support for those living with mental illness was powerful, and it was lovely to see the community come together to share messages of kindness. We are lucky at HNC to work and study within a community that is genuinely supportive. Our students know that problems big and small can be solved by sharing them and working together and I am proud of the exceptional support that every member of staff at our College puts in place for our students”.

Don’t forget that there is a wealth of information available on Teams on how to access the support available at College.
