HNC’s Dance and Musical Theatre students have attended a high energy performance at the Bradford Alhambra by Ailey 2 – Alvin Ailey’s American Dance Theatre’s second company.
Ailey 2, founded in 1974 as a bridge between the Ailey School of Dance and the professional dance world, is internationally renowned for its collaboration between the world’s most respected choreographers and emerging, next generation dance talent. Together deliver high energy performances across the globe. The company, who are currently touring the UK for the first time since 2011, have performed in just twelve venues during this tour, and we were lucky enough to secure tickets for our students.
On the day, the group enjoyed a medley of performances, put together by the company’s new artistic director, Francesca Harper, who herself created the futuristic work ‘Freedom Series’ which examines identity and community. The showcase also included a timeless classic from Alvin Ailey himself, ‘Revelations’, a central section of William Forsythe’s work from 1989s ‘Enemy of the Figure, and a section of the 2001 classic ‘The Hunt by Robert Battle.
Cat John, Teacher of Dance and Musical Theatre, comments “What an exceptional experience it has been to watch Ailey 2’s first UK tour in over a decade! The young dancers performing in this prestigious company are the next generation of up and coming dancers, and it is has been incredibly motivating for our students to see the hard work and talent it takes to secure a career in this competitive industry. Our students were genuinely wowed by this incredible performance and I know that they will take great inspiration from this experience that will inform their own work here at HNC”.
