AMUNI! STUDENTS SOAK UP REAL LIFE LEARNING IN SICILY
14.10.2025Students at HNC enjoy a range of enlightening opportunities, and the chance to take part in unique experiences and trips that bring their learning to life. Recently our A Level Geography and A Level Environmental Science students enjoyed an action packed trip to Sicily, where they were able to apply learning in the classroom to a real life context.
Staying in Letojanni, the group visited Mount Etna to tour the still active volcano, and learn more about the steps being taken to protect the town following the 1992 eruption. They also visited Taormina and Alcantara Gorge, exploring the breathtaking cliffs which have been formed from lava basalt. In the visit to Taormina, our students soaked up the Sicilian culture, while enjoying the beautiful and historic architecture.
During the trip, the group also took the hydrofoil boat to Vulcano, a UNESCO World Heritage where they explored the dormant volcano and the thermal and sulphurous waters. Naturally, the group also had time to explore the local area, and enjoy traditional food and Sicilian culture.
Stuart Ogden, Teacher of Geography comments: “This was an amazing experience for our A Level Geography and A Level Environmental Science students who experienced an immersive learning journey. There truly is nothing like learning more about craters, lava flow and how the risk of active volcanos are managed than ascending Mount Etna. Sicily is a fieldwork experience like no other, with the group also able to consider the impact of tourism and human processes on this historical and beautiful place. The experience has deepened the knowledge they are developing in the classroom, and broadened horizons. It has been a genuinely unforgettable experience, and we were incredibly proud of how the group reflected our College values in their excellent behaviour during the course of our action packed trip.”
