AN ENLIGHTENING OPPORTUNITY: HNC STUDENTS INVITED TO CHALLENGE THEIR THINKING ABOUT CAUSES OF HOMELESSNESS

HNC has revealed that students are being invited to join a special presentation which will help them to learn more about why homelessness is such a complex issue. The session will be delivered by Simon on the Streets, a West Yorkshire charity which provides outreach and emotional support for the homeless and vulnerably housed.

The bookable session will take place on Wednesday 5 March during lunch and is open to all students. This opportunity will help students to learn more about the complex reasons people may become homeless or vulnerably housed, and challenge some of the stereotypes that exist around the homeless.

In addition, the session will be hosted by a member of HNC’s Alumni community, who will be taking the opportunity to reveal more about her own College experience, and how she has developed a successful and rewarding career in the charitable sector.

Catherine Cushnie, Assistant Principal comments: “Shelter estimates there are 309,000 people who are homeless in the UK, and despite the fact we live in a developed country, homelessness is an issue for our society. The reasons that someone may be homeless, or choose not to engage with support, can be complex. As a College we want to make sure our young people have the knowledge and confidence to challenge unfair stereotypes and inequality, and understand why some individuals experience an unfairer world. This session is an opportunity for our young people to be enlightened about why homelessness is not always for the reasons that the media portrays, and hopefully inspire them about how they can use their voice and make a difference, including by supporting the work of organisations such as Simon on the Streets. In addition, we always love welcoming former students to HNC, and we are looking forward to hearing about Lauren’s post HNC journey and her tips for forging a career in the charitable sector!”

Students who wish to book can do so via the Link posted in their year group channel.
