AND THEY’RE OFF! DofE STUDENTS START THEIR GOLD AWARD PREPARATIONS

It’s been a cloudy few days at HNC but that hasn’t stopped our DofE Gold students from starting to develop the essential skills they will need to complete their exciting upcoming residential expedition.

All students at HNC have the opportunity to enrol on the DofE Gold programme which helps our young people to develop their confidence and skills such as leadership, teamwork, problem solving, presentation and communication. Those taking part will also become more aware of their personal strengths and how to take the initiative in various challenging or difficult situations. Achieving DofE Gold therefore can help students to stand out from the crowd when applying for jobs and universities, and give them the confidence to shine in pressurised situations such as interviews.

The award requires students to complete five sections Physical, Skills, Volunteering and the Expedition section, along with a Residential where students work together independently to navigate an unfamiliar environment. Our HNC DofE students have recently started to prepare for their expedition, practicing cooking over a campfire, navigating using a compass and planning what essentials they will need (and be able to carry!) to safely complete their expeditions.

Due to the nature of the Gold award, it is not too late for students to enrol – further information can be found by emailing dofe@huddnewcoll.ac.uk

Joe Norton, Head of Faculty Enrich comments: “Undertaking DofE is a real investment in the future, as students who opt to take part genuinely develop the skills, attitudes and experiences they need to become more rounded young adults who are ready to take their next steps with confidence. The award demonstrates that a student has actively chosen to commit to becoming their best selves, that they have given back and they have pushed themselves out of their comfort zone – which is why it is valued so highly by employers and universities. Our current group have got off to a great start planning and preparing for their residential section, and we are looking forward to sharing more about their progress over the coming months!”
