BRAIN DAY: HNC PSYCHOLOGISTS TAKE PART IN HANDS-ON BRAIN WORKSHOP
20.11.2025HNC recently welcomed Dr Guy Sutton, an expert in genetics and neural development, for a fascinating ‘Brain Day’ workshop that explored brain anatomy and function and it’s relation to the behaviour and development of schizophrenia – including a live dissection of a sheep’s brain.
Students studying A Level Psychology explore a range of topics relating to brain development and disorders, such as Schizophrenia. In this fascinating workshop delivered by Dr Guy Sutton from Medical Biology Interactive (MBI), students explored how the brain develops and how the different areas of the brain are responsible for different functions. The group also learned about the factors that can lead to depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and disorders such as Schizophrenia – and whether diagnosis of conditions such as anxiety and ADHD are over diagnosed by the private medical community.
As well as discovering more about the factors that lead to Schizophrenia and the debilitating symptoms that come with the illness, the group were also invited to take part in a live dissection of a sheep’s brain, learning more about the anatomy of the brain and the how the different areas of the brain work together to function.
Tracey Holland, Teacher of Psychology, shares more “Dr Guy Sutton is a well-known expert in his field, and as well as working with MBI to educate young people across the country, has worked in a number of world-class universities to teach medical and psychology students about the brain. Our annual ‘Brain Day’ is an exciting day where students can get hands-on with a live dissection that allows them to really explore brain function and anatomy, as well as developing a wider understanding of mental disorders such as schizophrenia, which is a key topic studied in the A Level Psychology syllabus.
