Applied and Alternative Academic Qualifications

In Applied Science will see you will explore content from across the three core disciplines – Biology, Chemistry and Physics. This is a hands-on, interactive course equivalent to 1 A Level, which will see you learning through completing experiments, carrying out research and developing your academic knowledge through a wide range of practical investigations and research projects. Through these experiments in our state-of-the-art laboratories, you will investigate a variety of Applied contemporary scientific issues and develop an in-depth understanding of fundamental scientific theories. This is a course designed to underpin your scientific knowledge and will complement your wider study programme, allowing you to progress to your next steps with confidence.

The examining body for this qualification is OCR.

Specific requirements

You’ll need to meet the entry criteria for your chosen pathway and achieve two GCSEs in Science or a 4/4 or above. A Level 2 vocational qualification in Science (Merit) can be substituted for grade 4.

An enriching experience

Studying Applied Science at HNC is an enriching experience. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to develop your skills and interests, broadening your horizons and building your cultural capital. These experiences are integral to life at HNC and will help you to stand out from the crowd. Some of the experiences our Applied Science students enjoy include:

  • Residential visits to stretch and challenge you and build on your cultural capital. In previous years, Science students spent 10 nights in South Africa, taking part in conservation projects and working with pupils in a rural primary school
  • Visits to universities and employers to develop your understanding of the subject and possible progression routes
  • The option to become one of our STEM ambassadors, representing HNC at events such as our Open Days, building key employability skills such as communication and leadership
  • Taking part in hands on, practical workshops where you will develop skills valued by employers and universities alike
  • Taking part in lunchtime enrichments such as Astronomy Club and Dissection Club

How will you be assessed?

The qualification is made up of 50% examined content and 50% non examined assessment (NEA) content. This approach supports you to develop both theoretical knowledge and understanding and the skills needed to apply it in different contexts, helping you to develop a broad and relevant set of skills and experiences.

Where does it lead?

Applied Science is a practical and respected course that gives students a solid understanding of the three core sciences, so is most suited to those hoping to pursue a STEM based career. Valued by universities and employers alike, students can progress either to higher education or the world of work, including degree level apprenticeships, from this qualification. It leads to an impressive and diverse range of career opportunities such as Biochemistry, Food Science, Pharmacy and Clinical Sciences.
