Applied and Alternative Academic Qualifications

Applied Musical Theatre is a fast-paced and exciting course that will see you develop the skills required for life in the spotlight! This full time, 3 A Level equivalent course will help you to prepare for your future by focussing on your singing, acting, dancing and performance skills. This qualification is highly practical and progression focussed, allowing you to develop both your technical and professional skills and knowledge.

The examining body for this qualification is Pearson.

Specific requirements

You’ll need to meet the entry criteria for the Applied Pathway and relevant practical experience will be required. Applicants will be requested to audition.

Your learning experience

As this is a full-time course, students opting to study this subject must be ready to step into the spotlight and have an ambition to work in the Musical Theatre industry. You’ll be expected to play a leading role in our high-energy College performances.

The topics you will study, include:

  • Exploring performance styles (singing/dancing/acting)
  • Devising performance
  • Ensemble singing
  • Performing Musical Theatre for industry
  • Preparing audition material
  • Different styles of dance, including jazz

An enriching experience

Studying Applied Musical Theatre at HNC is an enriching experience. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to develop your skills and interests, broadening your horizons and building your cultural capital. These experiences are integral to life at HNC and will help you to stand out from the crowd. Some of the experiences our Applied Musical Theatre students enjoy, include:

  • Performing in our end of year College musical- this year, Musical Theatre students hosted a performance of We Will Rock You
  • Participating in inspirational and valuable guest workshops with prestigious performance companies and notable alumni
  • Attending shows and performances in local theatres
  • Residential trips and visits – this year our students enjoyed spending time in London to experience the West End
  • Taking part in lunchtime enrichments such as Make Your Own Music, Lyricist Lounge, Live Sound and Stage Lighting and Acoustic Open Mic Club

Throughout your studies, your teachers will create an environment where you will be encouraged to discuss a wide-range of topics which will support you to develop an enlightened approach to the world around you. These discussions will be linked to your passions, study programme and your wider career ambitions.

Assessment is via examinations and coursework.

Where does it lead?

Our Applied Musical Theatre students have progressed to a range of degrees and Performing Arts Conservatories. Our Alumni include Lawrence Guntert who has performed in West Side Story, Rosie O’Hare who has performed in a range of musicals including Hairspray and The Sound of Music, and Jed Hoyle, who has performed in The Book of Mormon.

The diverse nature of the Musical Theatre course means that you will complete your studies with a valuable set of skills – including public speaking, teamwork and organisation that are transferable to a range of degree courses and job roles. Applied Musical Theatre students progress to university to study subjects such as:

Please note this is only available as an Extended Diploma. This means it is a full time study programme and therefore is not available to study alongside any other subject.
