HNC A LEVEL GEOGRAPHERS EXPLORE URBAN LANDSCAPES

HNC’s Year 13 A Level Geography students have recently returned from the historic city of Liverpool, where they discovered how the physical, social and cultural influences of the past have shaped one of the UK’s most famous cities.

In A Level Geography, students explore a wide variety of topics and undertake a range of fieldwork and geographical investigations throughout their time on the course. In this most recent fieldtrip, the group explored the city of Liverpool, learning more about the UK’s urban landscapes as part of their wider exploration of human geography, and exploring how redevelopment is shaping the UK’s towns and cities for future generations.

During the visit, the group spent time exploring the Royal Albert Dock and discovered more about the city’s past and culture at the Museum of Liverpool, researching the unique character of the city and how that culture was developed over hundreds of years with influences from areas as diverse as music, sport and politics, and how its wealth was created through the passage of cotton, sugar and immigration through the city’s historic port. The group also explored ‘Liverpool 1’, the retail-led waterfront development at the heart of the city’s redevelopment programme.

Stuart Ogden, Faculty Lead Enlighten, comments “Field trips form an integral part of A Level Geography. Our recent trip to the world-famous city of Liverpool was an enlightening experience – Liverpool has a long and illustrious history and has been both the UK’s richest city (1840s) and the UK’s poorest city (1980s), making it a genuinely fascinating city to investigate. As a group, we have been exploring the impact that humans have on the world, and this trip will no doubt provide a new dimension to the lessons we have learnt in the classroom”.
