HNC is delighted to reveal that A Level 3D Design student, Finlay, has recently taken part in Sheffield Hallam University’s well-respected Interior Architectural Challenge.

This year’s challenge was open to students in Year 9 and above from across the UK, and students were tasked with ‘designing a space for a happier future’. Students were asked to consider a range of design styles such as biophilic and sustainable design when considering their proposed space, making sure that their designs were both human and planet centred. The competition was judged by representatives of Dezeen magazine, the world’s most influential architecture publication and architects from BDP, a major international practice of architects, designers, engineers and urbanists.

The brief allowed the entrants to choose from a variety of mediums to showcase their design, from creating a 3D model to producing a digital image. Finlay – who was one of ten students to be shortlisted out of almost 200 entries – chose to submit a piece focusing on the benefits that houseplants can bring to our homes. He comments “Integrating greenery into the home fosters a symbiotic relationship between nature and wellbeing. Scientifically, houseplants improve air quality by filtering toxins, promoting respiratory health. Beyond the physiological benefits, the sight of lush foliage invokes calmness, reducing stress and anxiety. Tending to plants instills a sense of responsibility and routine, contributing to a structured lifestyle. Moreover, the vibrant colors and textures of greenery enhance aesthetic appeal, elevating mood and creating a visually pleasing environment. In essence, cultivating a verdant indoor space creates a haven that not only nurtures plants but also nurtures the holistic wellbeing of those who inhabit the space.”

Sara Graul, Faculty Lead Enlighten for Art and Media, comments “It is an incredibly achievement that Finlay was shortlisted in such a prestigious young designer competition. It is testament to his hard work, talent and commitment to design that he beat so many other talented young designers to have his work judged by some of the most influential designers and architects of our time. Finlay really does embody our College values and works hard every day to become his best self as he works toward his dream career as an architect”
