HNC’s Year 13 A Level Drama and Theatre Studies students have recently wowed audiences with a special ‘Candlelight Performance’, an annual HNC tradition that showcases the talent and skill of the College’s Drama students as they prepare for their final assessments and next steps.
Taking place ahead of the official examining body visit, the Candlelight Performance in the College’s state-of-the-art theatre, The Boilerhouse, is an annual showcase where family, friends and staff are invited to enjoy a special evening of dramatic performances. The showcase included a mix of published scripted play material, with students performing a variety of complex and dramatic monologues, duologues and extracts from plays ranging from the historical to the contemporary, with each piece reflecting the student’s choice of study for their final assessed performances.
As well as providing a valuable opportunity for our Year 13 students to hone their final performances in front of a live audience, the College’s Year 12 students were also invited to showcase their acting on the night, providing a further opportunity to develop their on-stage performance skills. Throughout the showcase, both year groups were also able to practise the technical elements of their performances, focusing on areas such as costume, set design, music and lighting. Feedback from the showcase was incredibly positive, with one guest sharing “well done, delivered with feeling, the acts touched upon some sensitive subjects that the performers handled very maturely”.
Emma Laws, Teacher of Drama and Theatre Studies, comments “Our annual Candlelight Performance is a beautiful way to draw our Drama and Theatre Studies students’ time at HNC to a close. Not only does this performance provide our students with confidence in their performance skills ahead of their final assessments, it also gives the group an opportunity to share with their family and friends their passion for drama, demonstrating the quality of the performance techniques honed during their time at HNC. I am immensely proud of our students’ hard work and commitment, and the passion and enthusiasm they displayed on stage. I am confident that they will continue to wow audiences as they progress to their dream careers”.
