Work experience forms a key part of our students’ experience at HNC. Not only does a work-based placement aid progression plans, it also allows students to build essential skills as they progress through their education and on to their dream careers. In our latest story, we share more about Fintan’s recent work experience placement, and how he has used the experience to become his best self.
Fintan, who is hoping to progress to university to study Physiotherapy, is one of a number of students to have recently undertaken a work placement at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary (HRI). Fintan spent the day working alongside a qualified Physiotherapist, working in the hospital’s outpatient MSK department, gaining a genuine insight to the important role that Physiotherapy plays in patient rehabilitation. On the day, Fintan observed the wide range of responsibility that comes with the role, and enjoyed supporting patients alongside his mentor, Euan.
Fintan comments “Gaining work experience at our local hospital has been brilliant! Coming across a Physiotherapy work placement is rare so I made sure I made the most of it by asking questions and getting stuck in with any tasks I was able to. It was interesting to see that the values that are important to patient care are similar to the College’s own values, staff that work in the NHS are self-disciplined, passionate, empathetic and respectful, and this was evident in how staff treated not only their patients but each other as well. It was so helpful to shadow Euan as he worked with a wide variety of patients and it was so interesting to see just how different each appointment and treatment plan was. I really enjoyed my time at HRI and I know it will support my application to university”.
Rebecca King, Work Experience Officer, adds “We ae lucky to work in partnership with our local trust to offer our students a variety of NHS placements to support their progression beyond HNC. Securing a place on a competitive degree programme in areas such as Medicine and Allied Healthcare can be challenging, and by taking part in work placements, students can use the experience to become their best selves and stand out from the crowd. Thank you to Euan and the rest of the team at HRI for supporting our students to develop their skills”.
Students can book a work experience appointment to learn more about how to secure work experience and explore College arranged opportunities. Further information can be found in the Teams careers channel.
