HNC’s Year 13 Applied Sport and Exercise Science Diploma students recently enjoyed a practical trampolining session hosted by HNC student Lucy C, at the Huddersfield Trampoline Centre, exploring how sports performers develop their skills under mentorship and coaching.
Applied Sport and Exercise Science students develop their academic skills both inside and outside the classroom, exploring a number of topics from coaching to nutrition to physiology. In a recent visit to the Huddersfield Trampoline Centre, Year 13 Diploma students had the opportunity to put their learning of Skill Acquisition – a topic that explores the contributing factors of skilled performance and skill development – into practice, with a student led masterclass in Trampolining!
Lucy C, who studies Applied Sport and Exercise Science and Applied Law at HNC and is an accomplished Trampolinist, led the practical session, showcasing a range of trampolining techniques. During the session Lucy coached her peers using verbal, visual and manual guidance, demonstrating the range of techniques a coach must use to support an athlete to successfully develop their skills.
Practically applying the lessons learnt in the classroom is a key way in which we embed student knowledge ahead of assessments. Tom Smith, Faculty Lead Health and Sport, shares more “In Applied Sport and Exercise Science, we explore a wide range of topics that provide students with a deep understanding of human anatomy and how it functions under the pressure of elite sport. In this hands-on session, our students enjoyed a peer-to-peer coaching session, where Lucy not only demonstrated her skills in trampolining, she also worked with the other students to develop their own skills. This demonstration linked directly to the current topic of study, Skills Acquisition, which is a topic that examines how sports performers learn and develop their skills, and the importance of expert coaching in specially designed facilities. Well done to Lucy, who ran a fantastic session, and to the rest of our students for their enthusiasm in taking part!”
