COACHING THE COMMUNITY: HNC AND UNIVERSITY OF HUDDERSFIELD ENJOY SPORTS COACHING WORKSHOP

HNC recently welcomed the University of Huddersfield to take part in an inspirational coaching session with the College’s current Applied Sport students, who in turn, will support local school pupils through a programme of coaching throughout the rest of the academic year.

HNC, who has a long-standing partnership with the University of Huddersfield, hosted a special workshop led by final year Sports students from the university. The workshops, which form an integral part of the degree-level students’ assessments, took place on the College’s state-of-the-art 3G pitch and focused on a wide-range of sports coaching and techniques. These sessions not only allow students studying the subject at degree level to complete their studies, they’re also a key way in which our own Applied Sport students can build on their own coaching skills through peer to peer mentoring, and will in turn use these skills to coach primary school pupils throughout Kirklees.

The College’s Applied Sports students also undertake coaching-based assessments as part of their course, and following this degree-level workshop, will start to develop their own programme of coaching aimed at primary school children. Later in the academic year, the College will also work alongside the Pennine Sports Partnership team to deliver a range of activities locally, including a large-scale event for National School’s Sports Week and events for the This Girl Can initiative.

Leon Wright, Head of Faculty Sport and Health, comments “It was a pleasure to welcome students from the University of Huddersfield – many of whom were previous students at the College – to deliver a range of motivational workshops to our current students to help them build on the skills they learn in the classroom. This is a community partnership that has far reaching benefits, as the skills developed in these sessions help our own students to deliver workshops to primary school pupils to inspire them to keep fit and healthy. This is a partnership that truly embodies the College’s vision to empower each other to shape a better future – as well as ensuring students past and present achieve the life-changing qualifications that will eventually lead to their dream careers”.
